Shinwook KIM

(nato a Seoul nel 1982, si diploma nel 2012 alla Fine Art Goldsmiths, University of London, nel 2014 termina un master in fotografia al Royal College of Art) S.K. è un artista che con i mezzi della fotografia costruisce una sua dimensione introspettiva notturna, realizzando una mise en abyme in cui si duplica incessantemente un passaggio di soglia dallo stato vigile allo stato ipnotico.

Un esempio visivo di questo suo processo operativo è leggibile nel ciclo di opere intitolato The Night Watch 2011-2017, che riprende, durante il servizio militare, una sua ronda notturna fatta, in solitaria, in una zona di confine tra la Corea del Nord e quella del Sud. Lo stato di stanchezza accomunato alla tensione che lo attraversa, transitando in una zona demilitarizzata, ma a rischio, gli fanno scambiare per una persona un grande tronco d’albero in cui si è improvvisamente imbattuto. Da quel momento i suoi scatti fotografici riprendono, tra dominanti cromatiche verdi e viola, l’aspetto fantasmatico della foresta in cui deambula come in un sogno ad occhi aperti. La notte, la luce spettrale, che illumina i bordi delle chiome degli alberi, conferiscono alla sua opera un’immagine otticamente magnetica e psichicamente gotica.

Shinwook Kim è profondamente attratto dai confini immateriali tra Paese e Paese, dai terreni di nessuno, dai non-luoghi, come gli aeroporti e le sale d’aspetto, teorizzati da Marc Augé, dagli stati di slittamento tra il reale e l’immaginario.
